Analysis of IIT-JEE 2009

The IIT-Joint Entrance Exam (IIT-JEE) questions are always unique in their context which bobs up the complexity in preparation. Thus cracking IIT JEE requires a combination of concepts across different chapters and a proper coaching. However, some basic data analysis about IIT JEE can be quite revealing and could give some important insights into how an IIT Aspirant should go about  Preparation for each subject. Such an analysis forms the basis of our understanding in JEE.

Pattern Changes in the IIT-JEE exam

The overall difficulty level of IIT JEE 2009 question papers was more than that of 2008 papers. Experts deem that introduction of “More than one choice correct” type of questions and subjective type questions with negative marking is a clear indication of JEE committee wanting to eliminate students who do guess work and preferring those IIT Aspirants who work out the problems.

There were 60 questions in IIT JEE 2009 question paper 1 (20 each) and 57 in question paper 2 (19 each). Each paper carries 240 marks. Combined together students were supposed to score from 480 marks.

Change of Pattern in IIT JEE exam

Change of pattern is a conscious effort by the IITs to build unpredictability into the exam. Students who can apply IIT JEE Syllabus concepts on the fly generally perform better than those who tend to memorize concepts.

The major changes this year in IIT JEE 2009 exam as compared to 2008 were:

* Subjective type questions were introduced again. There were 8 subjective questions in question paper 2 for each subject. There was negative marking for wrongly marked choices. Total of 24 subjective type questions with negative marking will make scoring difficult this time.

* After a long time “more than one choice correct” type of questions with negative marking were introduced in IIT JEE 2009. This will eliminate people who do guess work in the paper.

Assertion and Reason type of questions were removed from both papers this time.

Difficulty Level

Mathematics papers in IIT JEE 2009 were definitely difficult especially question paper 2 where subjective questions were introduced and even the matrix (match the column) type of questions were not easy to score. In question Paper 1 also questions were taking time to solve and it was not easy to score marks. IIT JEE 2008 Mathematics papers were also difficult especially paper 1 but 2009 mathematics papers can be rated as more difficult of the two to score.

Both Chemistry papers in IIT JEE 2009 (I and II) were trickier than the chemistry papers of the last year . Multiple choice and Match the columns were tricky but certainly not difficult. Mathematics Papers seemed to be easy at first but the trick element made scoring difficult for the IIT Aspirants.

In IIT JEE 2009 Physics paper -1, about three fourths of the paper was easily solvable. Physics Paper 2 required more time and patience to solve questions. Overall, the 2009 papers were “moderately” difficult. It will also be rated as a low scoring paper.
